Suhanko Arctic Platinum Oy (SAP) is a Finnish mining company founded in 2018 and owned by CD Capital Natural Resources Fund III L.P. SAP’s parent company is managed by the UK-based private equity firm CD Capital Asset Management Ltd (CD Capital). SAP has been reporting on its operations in accordance with the TSM system since 2019.
SAP’s main goal is to develop the Suhanko mining project in South Lapland into production. The exploitation of the multi-metal deposits in Suhanko has been studied for several decades. The ore deposits in the mining project area contain the precious metals palladium, platinum, gold, and rhodium, as well as the base metals copper, nickel and cobalt, which are included in the EU’s list of critical metals. These metals are essential as Europe undertakes to produce green energy, reduce transport emissions, become self-sufficient, and electrify society’s functions.
SAP aims to start construction of the planned mine at the end of 2026. The Suhanko deposits are located in Ranua, right on the border of the Municipality of Tervola, approximately 45 kilometres south of the town centre of Rovaniemi. In 2024, a new asphalt-surfaced road of approximately 10 kilometres was completed from main road no. 78 to the mine’s planned concentration plant area.
The company has a total of 9,483 hectares of valid exploration permits (11 permits). Ore exploration is carried out in the municipalities of Ranua, Rovaniemi, Tervola, and Keminmaa. Suhanko Arctic Platinum Oy uses deep drilling, geophysical ground and aerial measurements, excavator exploration trenches, bedrock mapping, saw-channel sampling, mini-drill rig sampling, RC drilling, geochemical sampling and boulder mapping as its exploration and study methods. In addition, the company has carried out test excavations and numerous ore concentration studies, especially in connection with the feasibility studies of the Suhanko mining project.
